How to make The Black Forest Julep
One of the simple pleasures in life is finding a great cocktail recipe and taking the time to treat yourself to it. One of my favourite sweet (with a kick) variations on a classic is the Black Forest Julep. Its a sweet and strong combination of bourbon, berries, chocolate and mint. It’s also refreshingly simple to make.
It’s a sweet and strong combination, it’s also refreshingly simple to make.
Here’s what you’re going to need to make one for yourself…
Ingredients:
- Bourbon (Dealers choice on this one, my personal favourite is Makers Mark)
- Chambord
- Chocolate syrup
- Mint
- Powdered sugar
- Crushed ice
- Fresh raspberries (to garnish)
Step 1, Build:
Begin by adding 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar to the bottom of your cup (I’m using a washed out tin because I don’t have a fancy julep cup). Next add 50ml Bourbon to the cup and stir u too the powdered sugar is dissolved. Now you want to take 5 – 6 mint leaves picked from the stem, clap them between your hands to release some of the fragrance and add them to the cup.
Step 2, Mix:
Fill the cup 3/4 full of crushed ice and with a long spoon gently stir the bourbon and mint through the ice until the outside of your cup has frosted up a little. Now add a little more ice to the top, enough so there’s a layer without liquid through it.
Step 3: Garnish and Serve:
Drizzle 25ml of Chambord and 15ml of chocolate syrup over the top of the crushed ice. Add a sprig of mint and some raspberries to garnish and enjoy sipping it with a short straw!
